Fashion Photography For Sale Biography
Italian fashion designer Gianfranco Ferre was born on 15th August 1944 in Legnano, Northern Italy. Before pursuing his career in fashion, Ferre received a degree in architecture at Milan Polytechnic Institute in 1969, which is how the designer obtained his nickname as ‘the architect of fashion’. Gianfranco’s flare for design was first spotted when he made some jewelry for a girlfriend at the time and it was spotted by the owner’s of a boutique in Portofino; this lead onto Ferre designing jewelry for Walter Albini.

Gianfranco Ferre later began freelance designing and started completing tasks for the likes of Lagerfeld and Fiorucci. From 1970-1973 Ferre spent some considerable time in India where he had been sent to study craftsmanship and advise the new fashion industry. After Gianfranco’s time spent travelling he returned to Italy with masses of inspiration and on his return had met Franco Mattioli who was the owner of a wavering clothing house. With this newfound inspiration from his time away, Ferre agreed to design for Mattioli and in 1974 brought out the first women’s ready-to-wear collection for Mattioli’s Baili label.

However, after four years of designing for Franco Mattioli, Gianfranco Ferre decided it was time he would establish his own label and work for himself. Ferre released his first women’s ready to wear line in 1978 that reflected the free nature of sports wear. Then in 1982 Gianfranco brought out his first men’s wear collection and accessories. Then in 1983, Ferre became a professor of fashion at the Domus Academy in Milan, and during the period between 1984-1987 Ferre was awarded the Italian Fashion Oscar six times.  In 1989 Ferre proved himself within the industry when he was made head of women’s wear, couture and fur at Dior, as at the time it was highly uncommon for a non-French designer to be given such a prestigious role in one of the most revered Parisian fashion houses.

Ferre’s designs are famous for his bold use of colours such as black, red gold and white; he also likes to make frequent use of lavish materials such as fur, leather and taffeta. It’s Gianfranco’s stunning attention to detail and the way in which clothes fit to the form of the body that has gained him resounding success within the fashion world. Sadly Ferre passed away on 15th of June 2007 aged 62, but his fantastic work has left an impressionable mark on the fashion industry and we can safely say that his designs (in particular the handbags) have been a great success at our sales.
