Fashion Photography Schools Biography
The founder of Families and Schools Together, and the creator of the FAST family engagement model. She credits these and other accomplishments in part to her education and upbringing. Dr. McDonald is proud of her formal education as well as her family education, both of which have helped to shape her professional work. Lynn says she learned to "think about things" as a philosophy major at Oberlin College in the 1960's; she continued her education at the University of Maryland-Baltimore, earning a Master's Degree in Social Work. It was there that she studied many approaches to family therapy and social change, including: traditional casework, family systems, group session management, and community organizing. She was awarded a PhD in Psychology from the School of Social Sciences, a unique cross-disciplinary approach to research in 1976 from University of California-Irvine. She takes great satisfaction from moving theory and research out of the ivory tower and into the communities to help effectively address social problems, and then evaluate outcomes.

As the daughter of a US diplomat, Lynn was raised in Europe, the Middle East, and Washington DC; she attended twelve schools in five countries before going to college. Lynn has been exposed to many languages and has an appreciation for many cultures. She knows personally the stress of high mobility, and the need for continuous family and social networks. And she believes her travels and experiences have taught her that all parents across all cultures, religions and social class, want what's best for their children. Like many parents, Lynn found a way to balance work and family life. She raised two wonderful children, including five years as a single parent. She worked ten years part-time in order to be the primary caregiver for her children. During this time, she made sure that the children were raised their whole lives in one school district and in one house. She learned personally how important informal and formal social supports are to the important role of mothering, allowing her to maintain an environment of stability and consistency. She applauds the work of parenting in our society, and is deeply committed to causes that find ways to offer more structural supports for stressed and isolated parents.

Lynn has been a family therapist, a child therapist and a community worker. She was a social work faculty member (University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1975-87), a family therapy professor (Edgewood College, 1996-ongoing), and a Senior Scientist at University of Wisconsin-Madison in the School of Education (1996-2007), and a Senior Lecturer at Brunel University in London, England (2007, extant). From her leadership position in a local community mental health agency for 10 years (1986-96), Dr. McDonald developed, piloted, evaluated, researched and disseminated several non-traditional, community-based, family systems based, approaches to mental health service delivery for children. One of these was a prevention-early intervention program she developed in 1988, at Family Service in Madison, WI, and it has since become internationally recognized as a system that produces significant outcomes. The multi-family group interaction model she developed is called FAST. It has since grown into a number of award-winning models and adaptations. She is now President of the Board of Directors for the company she launched to produce and distribute her uniquely practical approaches to improving childhood success through successful parenting. That nonprofit organization is called, Families and Schools Together, Inc. based in Madison, WI, which has disseminated programs across North America and globally.
